Overview

Home Chef is a meal delivery service that has been making the rounds for quite a while now. Fresh meal ideas are posted every week and the users are often spoilt for choice when it comes to the menu. The subscriptions are flexible and cost-effective. Home Chef delivers to around 98% of the US. Home Chef sends weekly deliveries Tuesday through Friday. You can select the day of week that’s most convenient for you. Delivery day options will vary according to where you live.

Plans & Pricing

Home Chef’s pricing policy is very flexible. Depending on your preferences, like how many people you want to cook for, how many times a week you want to cook, and what kind of foods you like to eat, you will be given a quote. At the basic level, meals start at $7.99 per serving and delivers coast-to-coast. Delivery is free for all orders of at least 3 meals per week. Plans include meals for 2-6 people and up to 6 meals a week.

Special Features

Home Chef includes some of the best features found in any meal delivery service. These features include:

Specialized videos

The Home Chef YouTube channel contains several videos that range from customer feedback, to cooking tips, to fully-fledged recipes. The videos aren’t categorized in any way but you can still find helpful stuff like “how to slice onions” or “how to grill chicken” on the channel.

Forward your basket service

Some meal delivery services provide users with the ability to receive their basket at a different location if they are not home. Even though Home Chef doesn’t provide this feature, you can still get your basket forwarded using a small trick. If you expect to be at a different place for the upcoming weekend, just update the delivery address in time to ensure that you receive your meals at the right destination.

Packaged meals

The meals are packed and sent in one box. A usual delivery box contains pre-portioned fresh ingredients and recipe cards. All items except for meat are sorted by recipe, then packed together in a larger plastic pack.

Environmentally friendly

Home Chef vows to stay as environmentally friendly as possible. The Home Chef delivery box consists of biodegradable, recycled, compostable textile fibers which make sure that the “going green” initiative is carried forth. The boxes are insulated and are shipped with ice packs to keep the ingredients fresh and chilled.

Mobile applications

Home Chef also has mobile applications available on both Android and IOS platforms. The applications are very well-designed and are simple to browse. They contain all the functions that the website has, and you can browse recipes and select meals with ease.

Customization

You can customize your meals with Home Chef. For example, you can choose to add a smoothie to your orders. For certain recipes, you can also customize the protein that is included (like substituting turkey in place of pork).

Ease of Use

The registration process starts with the user’s email address and preference selection. Preferences include not just how many people you’re cooking for and how many times a week you want to cook, but also specifics about your diet. For example, you can choose how much meat or fish you eat (omnivore, carnivore, pescatarian, or vegetarian) if you follow a low calorie or low carb diet, and if there are any foods you want to avoid (pork, soy, red meat, wheat, milk, mushrooms, shellfish, and nuts).

Then the shipping details form appears prior to the payment information form. Finally, you get to pick meals and decide what you want to cook. The forms are well-designed, intuitive, and very easy to fill out. You can’t make a profile on the website without entering your card information. Once logged in, the website is very user friendly, and you can change your preferences or pick meals at any time.

Suppliers

Home Chef receives supplies from the most reliable vendors, which provide the freshest organic produce available in the market. All the meals are prepared by experienced chefs and dietitians in approved facilities.

Variety of Food

Home Chef has a fairly vast menu. You can easily select filtering options at the top of the weekly menu page, including calorie-conscious, carb-conscious, < 30 minutes, and vegetarian. You’ll also find recipe tags, like Home Chef Express (meals ready in 15 minutes) and Oven-Ready (offers easy prep and a pan is included in your box).

Even though you can choose between seafood, meat, and vegetables, you have to go through the weekly updated list of available meals to take your pick. With that being said, there are vast choices and you can pick a simple one like a Swiss fondue burger or a more complicated one like the Coq au Vin with bone-in chicken. There are even Entree Salads (no cooking needed!), protein packs (which are just large packages of a variety of meats/seafood), and add-ons like smoothies and snacks. Nutrition facts are available with each recipe, on the recipe card PDF.

Food Allergies

All Home Chef ingredients get processed in the same facilities which also process eggs, soy, shellfish, peanuts, wheat and milk. Even though all of the ingredients are packaged separately, the facilities haven’t been certified “allergen-free”. The company, however, asks you if you have any dietary restrictions during the sign-up process and any meals which may contain ingredients that you are allergic to will not be shown to you.
